Based on assessment a practitioner must decide on the treatment aim. For the wound this will depend on the tissue at the wound bed, the amount of exudate and the risk of infection. An accurate diagnosis of wound type could dictate specific dressings such as venous leg ulcers and compression. For the patient this may include the presence and type of wound related pain or preference.
If in doubt advice should be sought from the Tissue Viability Service.

If any patient requires a dressing not included on the formulary then an exception report (available from the Tissue Viability Service or as an appendix to Wound management Policy CL.021) should be completed and sent to the Tissue Viability Service.
